About the Co-Chairs
Marci Reiss, LCSW
Founder & President
IBD Support Foundation
AGA Academy of Educators
Adjunct Faculty, University of Southern California
Ms. Reiss created and developed a novel integrated psychosocial program in the Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles in 2003. In 2006, she left Cedars-Sinai to expand her efforts to adult patients with IBD as well. That same year, Ms. Reiss established the IBD Support Foundation.
Throughout her career, Ms. Reiss has passionately pursued efforts to reduce the negative psychological, emotional and social impact that IBD has on patients and their families. She accomplishes this through a number of innovative approaches including: early psychosocial intervention with IBD patients and their families, collaborative multidisciplinary care with medical teams, consulting with hospitals and health systems and assisting in the development of psychosocial programs and services, and taking leadership roles in patient advocacy and healthcare policy change. In 2014, Ms. Reiss was selected to participate on the Technical Expert Panel (TEP) for gastroenterology, for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI), a group established by Congress for the purpose of testing innovative payment and service delivery models as part of healthcare reform.
Ms. Reiss developed a training program for IBDSF Certification in psychosocial care for allied healthcare professionals. She provides similar training for physicians including gastroenterologists, fellows and internal medicine residents about the role of psychosocial care and patient experience in medicine and how to improve the doctor-patient relationship.
Ms. Reiss has recently established the University of California San Diego’s IBD Center as the first IBDSF Certified IBD Center, highlighting the importance of providing psychosocial care to IBD patients as part of their clinical management. She is now focusing her efforts at Vanderbilt University and the Mayo Clinic to prepare their IBD centers for IBDSF Certification.
